Aluminum Conductor Reference Information

Key Definitions

GMR (Geometric Mean Radius) - Quantifies a conductor's internal inductance. By definition, the GMR is the radius of an infinitely thin tube having the same internal inductance as the conductor out to a one-foot radius. GMR is often expressed in feet to ease calculations with distances measured in feet. Note that the GMR is less than the actual conductor radius.

kcmil (Thousand Circular Mils) - A unit of conductor cross-sectional area where:

  • 1 kcmil = 1000 cmil
  • 1 kcmil = 785.4×10⁻⁶ in²
  • 1 kcmil = 0.5067 mm²

Unit Conversions

  • 1 ft = 0.3048 m
  • Resistance values are referenced at 60 Hz AC at 25°C
