Key Concepts:

  • Center of Gravity: The point in a body where the gravitational force may be taken to act
  • Center of Buoyancy: The center of gravity for the volume of water which a hull displaces

Stability States:

  • Stable: When the hull is upright and the center of gravity and center of buoyancy are on the same vertical line
  • Meta-stable: When the center of buoyancy is below the center of gravity (most common case)
  • Righting Torque: The moment created when the hull tilts, attempting to return it to upright
  • Capsize: When excessive tilting causes the buoyancy and gravity forces to create a moment that destabilizes the hull
