Oxidizers vs. inert vs. flammable gases. Compressed gases can be classified into three categories: oxidizers (contribute to combustion), inert gases (do not participate in combustion), and flammable gases (burn or explode when mixed with air/oxygen in the right concentration).

Gas Classification Overview

Compressed gases can be classified into three main categories:

Oxidizers

Not flammable by themselves, but will contribute to combustion as an oxidant. Do not mix with fats or oils.

Common oxidizers: Air, Chlorine, Fluorine, Nitric Oxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, Oxygen

Inert Gases

Do not take part in combustion processes and do not react with other materials. Useful for fire extinguishing systems where water damage must be avoided.

Common inert gases: Argon, Carbon Dioxide, Helium, Neon, Nitrogen, Xenon

Flammable Gases

Burn or explode when mixed with air or oxygen in the right concentration range. Mixture must be within the explosive concentration limits to ignite.

Common flammable gases: Acetylene, Ammonia, Arsine, Butane, Carbon Monoxide, Cyclopropane, Ethane, Ethylene, Ethyl Chloride, Hydrogen, Isobutane, Methane, Methyl Chloride, Propane, Propylene, Silane
