This calculator uses Boyle's Law to determine the volume of free gas at atmospheric pressure in a storage cylinder.

Formula: Va = pc × Vc / pa

Where:

  • pa = Atmospheric pressure (14.7 psia or 101.325 kPa)
  • Va = Volume of gas at atmospheric pressure (cubic feet or m³)
  • pc = Pressure after compression (psi or kPa)
  • Vc = Volume of gas after compression (cubic feet or m³)

  • High-pressure cylinders: >6000 psig (>410 bar)
  • Normal-pressure cylinders: 2000-2500 psig (140-175 bar)
  • Low-pressure cylinders: 480 psig (34 bar)

Example

Air compressed in a 1.76 cubic feet K-type cylinder at 2200 psig (2214.7 psia):

  • Va = (2214.7 psia) × (1.76 cu ft) / (14.7 psia) = 265 cu ft

This means the air in a 1.76 cubic feet container at 2200 psig occupies 265 cubic feet at atmospheric pressure.
