Dalton's Law

Calculate total pressure and partial pressures of gas mixtures using Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures. The total pressure of a gas mixture equals the sum of the partial pressures of individual gases.

Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures

The total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is the sum of the partial pressures of the individual gases:

ptotal = p1 + p2 + ... + pn = Σ pi

For an ideal gas, the partial pressure is calculated using:

pi = (n × R × T) / V

Where:

  • ptotal = total pressure (Pa, psi)
  • pi = partial pressure of individual gas (Pa, psi)
  • n = number of moles of the gas
  • R = universal gas constant (8.3145 J/(mol·K))
  • T = absolute temperature (K)
  • V = volume (m³)
