Domestic Service Water Supply Systems

The purpose of a domestic service water supply system is to provide consumers with enough hot and cold water.

In old buildings it is common to have gravity storage tanks on the top floor. More commonly used in new systems are pressurized tanks and supply pumps.

System Types

Gravity Tank System

  • Tank located at least 30 ft (10 m) above highest outlet
  • Pressure reducing valves required on lower floors in tall buildings
  • Tank volume compensates for limited supply line capacity
  • Drawbacks: freezing risk in winter, structural impact

Pressurized Tank System

  • Partly filled with air/gas behind membrane
  • Air compensates for pressure variations
  • Limited compensating capacity for main supply line shortage
  • More common in modern installations
