Electrical Inductance - Serial and Parallel Connections

Calculate electrical inductance in serial and parallel connected inductors. Choose between serial connection (L = L1 + L2 + ... + Ln) or parallel connection (1/L = 1/L1 + 1/L2 + ... + 1/Ln).

Total Inductance (L)-- H

Formula Reference

Serial Connection (Equation 1)

L = L1 + L2 + ... + Ln

Where:

  • L = Total inductance (henrys, H)
  • L1, L2, ..., Ln = Individual inductances in series

In serial connection, inductances add directly.

Parallel Connection (Equation 2)

1/L = 1/L1 + 1/L2 + ... + 1/Ln

Where:

  • L = Total inductance (henrys, H)
  • L1, L2, ..., Ln = Individual inductances in parallel

In parallel connection, the reciprocals of inductances add up. The total inductance is always less than the smallest individual inductance.
