Energy Transfer Equation

Calculator for fluid energy transfer using the equation Q = m × cp × ΔT, where Q is the quantity of energy transferred, m is the mass of substance, cp is the specific heat, and ΔT is the temperature difference.

Results

Energy Transferred (Q)-- kJ
Energy Transferred (Q)-- kWh

Formula

Q = m × cp × ΔT

Where:

  • Q = Quantity of energy transferred (kJ, Btu)
  • m = Mass of substance (kg, lb)
  • cp = Specific heat of the substance (kJ/kg°C, kJ/kg°K, Btu/lb°F)
  • ΔT = Temperature difference (°C, K, °F)

Example

2 kg of water is heated from 20°C to 60°C. The specific heat of water is 4.2 kJ/kg°C.

Calculation:

  • Q = (2 kg) × (4.2 kJ/kg°C) × ((60°C) - (20°C))
  • Q = (2) × (4.2) × (40)
  • Q = 336 kJ
  • Q = 336 kWs × (1/3600 h/s) = 0.093 kWh
