The expected total load for sanitary drainage systems is estimated using the empirical equation:
qet = k √(Σqn)
Where:
- qet = expected total drainage load (l/s or gpm)
- k = system coefficient (0.3 - 0.8 depending on system type)
- Σqn = total theoretical load from all fixtures (l/s or gpm)
System Coefficient (k) Guidelines:
Intermittent Use Systems (0.5 - 0.8):
- Hotels, Hospitals, Schools, Theaters, Factory Wardrobes
- Closer to 0.8 for smaller systems
- Closer to 0.5 for larger systems
Continuous Use Systems (0.3 - 0.6):
- Homes, Offices, Nursing Homes
- Closer to 0.3 for larger systems
- Closer to 0.6 for smaller systems
Note: Minimum expected total load cannot be less than the largest single fixture load.
