Transformers - kVA Ratings vs. Volt and Amps

A transformer transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled conductors. For an ideal transformer:

U1 / U2 = N1 / N2 = I2 / I1

Where:

  • U = electrical potential difference (Voltage)
  • N = number of turns of wire
  • I = current (Amps)

Example

A transformer with 500 primary turns, 3000 secondary turns and 230 V primary voltage:

U2 = U1 × N2 / N1 = 230 × 3000 / 500 = 1380 V = 1.38 kV
