Overview

The purpose of a duct silencer is to reduce the noise from the air-handling system caused by:

  • Fan operation
  • Passage of air through straight ducts
  • Impact of air flowing through components such as elbows, branches, mixing boxes, etc.

Key Silencer Classifications

Absorptive/Dissipative Silencers: Use sound absorbing materials to attenuate sound waves. Widely used in HVAC duct systems with parallel baffle arrangements.

Reflective/Reactive Silencers: Reflect sound waves back to the source using tuned cavities or membranes. Rarely used in HVAC systems.

Diffuser/Depressive Silencers: Use perforated elements to slow flow velocity and prevent low frequency noise generation.

Active Silencers: Use electro-acoustical means to cancel noise. Effective below 300 Hz for steady noise fields.
